It is what it is
22 March 2007
It may be unaustralian to admit this, but truth be known, I think the Opera House is pig ugly. Even so, the sight of it does scream home to me, and I do think highly of it as a venue.

Sometimes, when I look at things, they leap out and shout,
"Take my photo, now!"
Oh fuck, I have voices in my head.

A fountain at "Springwood", once the home of Norman Lindsay, now a National Trust gallery and museum. Norman Lindsay happens to be my favourite Australian artist. When I look at his work, I get lost in a world oozing sensuality and humour. Consequently, whenever I am in the Blue Mountains, I find it hard not to drop in at "Springwood", just to escape for a while to that world.
I adored (still do!) Lindsay's book The Magic Pudding. As a kid I spent hours poring over the wonderful illustrations, and how good are the character names - Bunyip Bluegum, Barnacle Bill and Sam Sawnoff?
"Springwood" was built in the 1890's, Norman Lindsay bought the property in 1912. He established Roman style gardens and created a fabulous bathing pool, many sculptures and fountains, which give the property a magical, sensual, secret garden feel.
